Chalk Drawings

Painters and sculptors don’t draw the same way. Painters make pictures; sculptors don’t. Fundamentally, sculptors don’t believe that there is such a thing as a “picture plane”, only a piece of paper to play around with. Consequently, foreshortening and perspective are not problems that concern sculptors. Usually, a sculptor’s drawing is basically a blueprint for building a sculpture. If the drawing looks nice, that’s great, but it isn’t the point. The point is always making sculpture. For me, a good drawing is anything I can make into a good sculpture.

My favorite drawing materials are pen and ink on white paper and red, white or black chalk on tinted paper. I started out drawing with chunks of dried red clay on newsprint, so red chalk is a logical drawing material for me. Chalk is very forgiving – it can be erased and worked over and over again. The deep smudges made by rubbing chalk feel generous and rich. And tiny, extremely sparing touches of white chalk for highlights are the best possible treat of the whole day. I like Canson paper for chalk drawings, which I use for studies and long drawings. I also goof around with new drawing materials whenever I get the chance. But I always come back to pen and ink and red chalk.
