Relief Sculpture

Having started out as a painter, I love the pictorial aspects of relief sculpture. It's a pleasure to get back to making pictures, which a sculptor hardly ever gets to do. Theoretically, a picture plane should make things easier. But in combining aspects of both drawing and sculpting, relief sculpture can be twice as complicated as either one. The shallower the relief, the more exacting the work.

"Bas-relief is the most difficult form of sculpture. The detail is achieved by the way that light strikes the relief’s shallow surface, creating shadows that give an illusion of depth." Saint Gaudens National Historic Site

Kiln gods

Kiln gods

Terracotta "kiln gods" made before each firing of the kiln to (theoretically) ensure the success of the firing. What began as a cross between a joke and a superstition has turned into an ongoing experiment into what makes a human face in relief look angry, sad, mean, nice or happy.

These range in size from 2 x 3 x .25" to 8 x 6 x 2" and are variously made of Jordan clay with grog, white raku clay or red earthenware clay. Some were the work of 5 minutes, while I goofed around with others for a couple of hours. Some of these want to be gargoyles.
